susan wenger the goddess

By Bayo Adeyanju of unlimitedconcept entertainment

Susan Wenger, devotee of Osun goddess, popularly known as Adunni Olorisa, passed away peacefully on Monday at the age of 94. Wenger, an Austrian, came to Osogbo, Osun State in the 50's in company of Ulli Beier and since then had been the rallying point in the revival of the dying tradition of Osun Osogbo.

The Ajaguna of Osogbo, Chief Gabriel Ojo Oparanti, said Wenger died at about 2.00 p.m. on Monday and she was buried shortly after in line with the instruction she gave while alive.
Oparanti said Wenger had instructed that her burial should not be delayed and that she should not be embalmed in any form.

According to the Ajagunna, "no one will be able to locate her tomb because she also said that she did not want any white to come and find out where she is buried and therefore turn it into a tourist location." unlimitedconcept visited the grove at about 7.00pm on friday, the traditionalists and Osun goddess devotees were performing rituals in the heart of Osun groves for Wenger, whom some of them called the spirit of Osun Osogbo.
Osun State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, described her death as a national loss.
The young Austrians girl’s sojourn in Nigeria began in the 50s during a chance visit to the famous Osun groove.

She fell in love with the place, and ever since, she had come to personify “the spirit of the forest,” as English translation of Osogbo.
Wenger, who went through marriages in Nigeria, was married to the renowned German documentarist, and founder of Mbari Mbayo Movement, Ulli Beier. The duo had lived in Ede, an historic city in Osun State. Adunni later got married to the late Ayansola Oniru (the drummer), a relationship that may have sealed his spiritual bond with Osogbo, where she lived and died.

Meanwhile, Wenger’s abode in Osogbo and the groves, which she made her spiritual above, became attractions to local and international tourists.
Wenger’s tangible and intangible legacies both in Osogbo and beyond are found in the bizarre carvings adorning the Osun grove and a legion of followers, and devotees of Osun, the river goddess to whom she dedicated her life.
