gods in africa
By Bayo Adeyanju of unlimitedconcept entertainment
Tribute to Olumo Rock By Bayo Adeyanju Songs of war from the far east, chanted by great warriors of war, to fight is to be victorious over their foes, fire comes out of their mouth in dramatising their prowess, claymore of war heavy with the stain of human blood, slain-ed souls cenotaphs are witness of their power and might, invisible hands are at it again with the strange spirit, drunk and ferocious to slaughter in a haste, lifeless bodies everywhere ending up as a waste, power is not in their swords, bow and arrow, neither is it in their ado, igbadi and ifunpa, a rock not just an ordinary rock but a fortress, Refuge in the middle of hot and endless battles, dwelling abode from neighbours war advances and missiles, sons and daughters never captives in the hands of the oppressors, our belongings never taken away as loots by our enemies, new songs were sang and new dance were danced by every appreciating souls, if not for a rock as protective like an eagle wings, strong and protective like a roaring lion, wings that spreads as cover over her people from their predators, a chosen inhabitants remembered by their saviour, loots from strange lands were all offered to you, appreciation of your love and kindness towards your people, a rock who delights not in loots but our victories and triumphs, Olumo rock what a great refuge you are to your people. Author's note * "ado, igbadi and ifunpa" [charms] It is based on historical fact and belief of the people in an ancient city call abeokuta in ogun state in Nigeria, abeokuta means under the rock, the rock served as protection for the people from many war advances and even from the colonial masters then. so it is believed to be a supernatural rock, a protective god. comments to homoreixja@yahoo.co.uk This poem has been requested 7 times since 27 October 2008 Search for more poems by Bayo Adeyanju Home page Submit poem Search options
